Charleston Kids with Cameras

I’m pleased to announce that we launched a new site last week for Charleston Kids with Cameras.

Charleston Kids with Cameras is an on-going mentorship program formed to help inner city boys and girls see both the world beyond their neighborhoods and the opportunities available to them through photography, videography, and writing. It is formed of local photographers partnered with children from the Charleston Housing Authority. We meet two Sundays a month, one for a photo shoot and one for a review of the photos. I have been lucky enough to be a “photography mentor” with the project since last September as well as on the “Steering Committee” since November .

McNelis Media became a sponsor of the project as well when Bryan and I volunteered to design a website for the project. Our main goal with the project was to showcase the student’s photography. This will allow not only for the world to see it, but also give the kids a sense of achievement. You can check out some of their photos here or some of my own from the project here.

The response to both the project has been overwhelming. We had some photos up in Earthfare, and the shoppers there donated over $1000 to buy new digital cameras for all of the kids! We also have several gallery showings coming up, so please check back either here, or on www.CharlestonKidsWithCameras.org!

Thanks,

Will

  1. Will!!

I have been wanting to do a project with kids with photography forever. I recently heard about CKWC…it is so amazing. How can I find out ways to get involved?? I am so excited. My passion is working with inner city kids, and my other passion is photography! I was going to start my own project and raise some money~then I stumbled upon this. So, again, I would love to get involved. Thanks so much! And thanks for the kayak lessons~it was a blast. Mike and I loved it.

  2. There’s no doubt that today’s kids will be tomorrow’s adult; joke intended. Anyway, our kids have a choice; turn out good, or turn out bad. Many of our inner-city children do not have the support they need to grow into productive adults. Teachers, as hard as they work, and as underpaid as they are, cannot do the job thoroughly as they only see the kids six hours a day. We have overcrowded facilities, a horrible lack of equipment, in addition to parents who just don’t care. I think CKWC is one of the best ideas since sliced bread. Responsible, capable role models giving up their time completely pro bono is a wonderful statement to make. When you hear of a gallery showing by these kids, don’t miss it. They are being taught well, often on a one-on-one basis. And they are learning much more than camera skills. They are finding out that some people really care about them and trea them as human beings. My hat is off to the ladies and gentlemen of CKWC. Thank you for this wonderful service.
